Activity Purpose/ Summary:
The Case Conference is an important element of the Social Work that Better Me does in the Remand Home. It is an indispensable part regarding the different cooperations that the Remand Home has with several organizations that faciliate lessons and counselling to contribute to the education, well-being and mental health of the children that are staying in the Remand Home. . The Case Conference is a place where all the cases are being discussed in terms of case management and follow ups that has been done.

Personnel Input:
Currently Better Me takes care of two “care and protection” cases in the remand home. That means that we, as a team, are trying to find solutions for these two boys on where to go, when leaving the remand home. The reasons of the kids, that stay in the remand home are various and the ways how they got to stay in that place are very different as well. To find out the true story takes a lot of effort and trust building approaches. As Social Workers we need to come up with a caseplan as well as a psychosocial plan to support the children.

During the Case Conference we discussed the Cases that the organizations that attended the meeting are taking care of. Updates, goals and concerns were shared and the collective responsibilty between the partners and staff of the remand home was emphazised.

The peer influence and the dynamics between the children in the remand home was discussed.

Everyone agreed that a legal clinic, trauma counselling and capacity building sessions are needed in the Remand Home.

Achievements:
It was a lively discussion about the different elements of the social work in the Remand Home which made us learn a lot about the work and the set up.

Unanticipated Achievements:
A conversation about the a positive narrative that staff and partners should try to present to the chjildren staying there because in the end the remand home is a place of help, that should give the children hope for a better society instead of confirming the first impression of the institution as a prison.

Supporting Partners:
Soulevmore, Kisumu Childrens Remand Home, Katholic Sisters, Homeless of kisumu
