Activity Purpose/ Summary:
During the swim lesson, the third graders focused on strengthening the basics of swimming as they practiced streamline, kickbacks, and floating.
Personnel Input:
The group of 17 kids gathered in the large pool under the guidance of Jule, Catharina, and Mr. John. The lesson kicked off with 5 minutes of free time in the water for the kids to have some fun. Jule then led the kids to the wall to review the streamline position, which they had practiced before. Once the kids had mastered the streamline position, Jule and Catharina demonstrated proper kicking technique, stressing the importance of keeping the knees below the water and using only the feet to kick. The majority of the group grasped this concept well and began practicing their kicks while holding onto the wall. After some positive feedback and adjustments, the kids progressed to practicing kickbacks with the help of noodles. Each kid partnered up to support one another during this exercise. Jule and Catharina went around to assist and advise each kid to help them improve. Floating was a major focus of the lesson, and the kids were advised to tighten up their stomachs to improve their ability to float. This advice helped many kids make significant improvements. The lesson wrapped up with 10 minutes of free time for the kids to play and continue practicing their skills.
