Activity Purpose/ Summary:
On Friday afternoon, the Better Me team visited Mama Ngina Children’s Home, located next to Kibuye Market, to explore potential partnership opportunities. The institution primarily cares for children who have been abandoned and those assigned by the courts, ranging from a few months old to 17 years old. Many of these children have various disabilities. The center can accommodate more than 40 children and is staffed by a dedicated team including a nurse, social worker, and babysitters. During our visit, we observed the well-maintained facilities, clean rooms, motivated staff, and ongoing infrastructure improvements. We are currently working with Jake Barton to ensure that this partnership is realized and works smoothly.

Personnel Input:
Our staff members made significant contributions by:
– Conducting thorough observations of the facility and engaging with the staff and children to understand their needs and challenges.
– Evaluating the potential of the 3-bedroom house within the facility to become a volunteer house.
– Identifying a variety of activities that our volunteers could participate in to support the children and staff at Mama Ngina Children’s Home.

Achievements:
– Facility Assessment: We conducted a comprehensive assessment of Mama Ngina Children’s Home, noting the clean and well-maintained rooms, motivated staff, and ongoing infrastructure improvements.
– Staff Interaction: We engaged with the staff to understand their roles, responsibilities, and challenges, gaining valuable insights into the operational dynamics of the institution.
– Volunteer House Identification: We identified a 3-bedroom house within the facility that could potentially serve as a volunteer house, providing comfortable accommodation for our volunteers.

Unanticipated Achievements:
– Strong Rapport with Staff: Our team established a strong rapport with the staff at Mama Ngina Children’s Home, fostering a sense of trust and mutual respect that will be beneficial for future collaboration.

– Infrastructure Improvement Ideas: We provided suggestions for further infrastructure improvements that could enhance the living conditions and overall environment for the children.

– Volunteer Activity Opportunities: We discovered a wider range of activities that our volunteers could participate in, beyond our initial expectations, enriching the experience for both the volunteers and the children.
