Activity Purpose/ Summary:
We started the swimming lessons with grade 7 by trying to build the water confidence. An important part of water confidence is to learn that the water will carry you and that you need to stay calm. Once the confidence in water is build up we can move to the next steps and teach the children about correct and safe swimming techniques.

Personnel Input:
So we firstly started by laying with our backs on the surface of the water and stay calm. After this exercise we started to learn the foot movement that’s important to swim on our backs. We did this by holding us up by the edge of the pool while moving our feet up and down on the surface of the water. For the next step the students are doing their exercise in groups of two. While student 1 lays on their back at the surface and practices body tension an the foot movement, student 2 stands in the water and holds student 1 up by the hips and shoulder blades. After student 1 did the exercise they will change their positions.
To strengthen the body tension and to learn to float in the water we played a game called „The floor is lava“. While playing the game the students aren’t allowed to touch the floor of the pool, that way they can practice the floating and body tension. Plus they get to gain confidence in the water. After the games the students were allowed to spend the last few minutes playing in the water.

Achievements:
We archived to build up the water confidence of the children. Even though a lot of them already were familiar with water/swimming techniques, there was still a lot of hesitation towards water. After the lesson we saw that the children were more comfortable around water (e.g. the postures of many students were a lot more confident).

Unanticipated Achievements:
There were no surprises.
