Activity Purpose/ Summary:
The purpose of this activity was to introduce a different way of teaching by using Swahili language in addition to pictures. Students did have to name the English term based on either the image or Swahili term. Also, a selected student did have to write it down on the white board in front of the other students once he or she was able to pronounce the respective English term.

Personnel Input:
Volunteers introduced a beginner’s dictionary book. Its content is sorted by specific topics that can be selected for several sessions. This time volunteers and social worker agreed to the “Cleanliness” topic as this covers also terms (young) people should be aware of, which is a good side effect.

Excerpts from the book were used as pictures on a computer to interact with the class. In addition, some sweets and candies were used as a kind of reward – once a student has named the English term based on the respective Swahili term and was able to write it down on the white board in front of the class – her or she got rewarded.

Achievements:
Class was very active throughout the session. Almost all students were proactive as a result of the kind of teaching as well as the rewards.

Unanticipated Achievements:
Students were even more proactive compared to last time. Selected topic was greatly appreciated.
