Activity Purpose/ Summary:
The idea was to conduct counseling sessions for our bursary-program sponsored children. These sessions enable us to understand social issues that our students face that may affect their ability to engage in school activities effectively.
Personnel Input:
Three caseworkers were present to talk to the children. They started by explaining to the whole group of students what the term “review/counseling” was for and the benefits that it would provide to them.
We then transitioned into one-on-one counseling sessions with the students. The sessions were in-depth, and we were able to discuss academic progress, participation in extracurricular activities, and their living situation at home. At the end of the session, each student would make a plan for the next school semester and set SMART goals for themselves.
We then took a group photo and thanked each student for attending the meeting.
Achievements:
We successfully conducted counseling sessions for 10 students as planned.
Unanticipated Achievements:
All the students were performing relatively well in school despite their less-than-ideal living conditions at home.
