Activity Purpose/ Summary:
We had a swimming class with the third grade, so we all headed to the nearby swimming pool together. It was the class’s first swimming lesson, so we split the group into beginners and advanced swimmers. We focused on building water confidence and teaching them how to float, tailoring exercises to their individual skill levels to make learning to swim easier.

Personnel Input:
After dividing the class into two groups, we kicked off the session by discussing body tension and water confidence. We then demonstrated various exercises, focusing on these two aspects. The “sea star exercises” and the “floating exercise” were particularly popular. For the “floating exercise,” students lay on their backs while a partner supported them from underneath. We then taught them the correct technique for kickbacks and had them practice this along with the previous exercises. To wrap up, we allowed the kids 10 minutes of free play in the water, which they really seemed to enjoy.

Achievements:
The students achieved excellent water confidence and also learned how to swim on their backs properly. The enjoyment in the water was immense; nevertheless, the kids always kept an eye on each other and were eager to learn more.

Unanticipated Achievements:
All of the children were so talented, and they listened very carefully to the instructions. By the end of the class, many of them were able to float on their own and do the kickbacks with the correct technique, with some help from a partner. That’s a very impressive result for the first swimming class!
