When I first arrived at Better Me Kenya, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. Over my time here, I’ve experienced significant personal growth.
My name is Phenny Owira, an intern from Kisumu National Polytechnic. This is my second month at Better Me, and it has already been an incredible experience.
My first day was filled with a mix of nervousness and excitement. The organization’s environment immediately felt welcoming. As I looked around, it was clear that everyone was striving toward a better version of themselves. I felt motivated but also knew that the path wouldn’t be easy.
Starting in a new environment can often feel overwhelming, but the staff at Better Me made the transition smooth. They were approachable, friendly, and always willing to lend a hand. Whether it was answering questions, offering guidance, or simply sharing words of encouragement, they helped me feel like I belonged from the very beginning.
The staff members have cultivated an atmosphere where everyone is encouraged to express themselves and contribute to the organization’s mission. This open-door policy made it easy for me to approach them with ideas or concerns, knowing they were truly listening.
One of the highlights of my experience has been the collaborative spirit. I’m working with individuals who are passionate about change.
I’ve also learned that success at Better Me is not just about having good ideas, but about how you communicate them and push for their implementation. I began refining my approach, ensuring that I not only shared my thoughts but also followed through by speaking up when necessary. Through this, I found that confidence and persistence are just as important as creativity.
There are lots of interesting activities in the organization, some of which are:
-
Education lessons at the Children’s Remand Home.
-
Life Skills sessions at Korando Educational Centre, St. Williams, and the Children’s Remand Home.
-
Art class at Korando Educational Centre.
-
Jijenge Youth Organization — which I didn’t like at first, but later realized would help me make wise life choices after attending two sessions.
One of the most impactful experiences I’ve had during my time at the Remand Home was organizing a debate session for the young people living there. It was an idea born from a desire to help them express their thoughts, think critically, and learn how to engage in constructive dialogue.
Leading the art class at Korando Educational Centre reminded me how important creativity is for kids. It gives them a chance to explore their imagination, express their feelings, and build confidence. The session wasn’t just about making art — it was about creating a space where the kids felt free to be themselves. Seeing them proud of their work was priceless.
I’ve also led some Life Skills lessons at Korando, St. Williams, and the Remand Home, and it feels good to talk about a topic and then see the kids implement it. For instance, I talked about confidence at the Remand Home, and when I returned for an English class, some of the usually silent students had started answering questions. That was really encouraging.
Meeting and working with international volunteers at Better Me has been a truly eye-opening experience. It’s a reminder of the incredible things that can happen when people from all walks of life come together with a shared purpose. The exchange of ideas, cultures, and skills not only strengthens our efforts here but also creates lasting connections that transcend borders. I feel incredibly lucky to have been part of such a diverse and inspiring community.
My time at Better Me has been nothing short of transformative.
From the supportive environment to the meaningful projects and daily opportunities for growth, I’ve gained so much more than I ever anticipated. The organization’s commitment to fostering personal development, community impact, and teamwork has left a lasting impression on me.
As I reflect on my journey, it’s clear that Better Me is more than just a workplace — it’s a place where people come together to make a real difference, both in their own lives and in the lives of others. I’m grateful for the experiences, the friendships, and the life lessons I’ve gained here, and I look forward to carrying them with me wherever I go next.
Asante sana.
