The Little Moments I’ll Never Forget – Shannon from Ireland

Getting to experience a new culture while doing something meaningful has been something I have been interested in for a while and when I found Better Me I knew it was the right place to do just that.

As a volunteer each day was different, and I quickly became accustomed to the laid back and chill way of life in Kenya.

Since I have returned people keep asking me, “What was your favorite part?”, and I honestly never know how to answer that question. As every time I think back on my time in Kenya it is simply impossible to choose just one moment, experience or conversation. It was the people I met, the lessons I learned, the laughs we shared and all the little moments in between that made the experience so special.

Some of my favorite moments have to be from the activities in the children’s remand home.

Seeing how open and eager the children were to learn and broaden their knowledge was honestly eye opening.

From life skills to English classes these learners would always dive head first into whatever activities we had planned for each session. These sessions highlighted that children do not need to be defined by their past, they simply need people who are willing to meet them where they are, believe in them and give them the opportunities and support they deserve. That is exactly what the Better Me team strive to do. Through education, sport and meaningful relationships, they are helping to equip these children with the skills, confidence and belief they need to build a brighter future.

Getting to spend every evening chatting, playing Lego, listening to music or being taught Kiswahili by the children are the little moments I will never forget. Thank you so much to everyone who welcomed me with open arms and filled my days with love and care.

I am extremely grateful for every smile, laugh, hug and chat we shared it made the experience so special.

The eager spirit and endless kindness has been beautiful to see.

Until next time!

Asante, Go raibh maith agat,

Shanon

This summer I spent a month in Kisumu and I had the best time of my life. Before going, I thought I was just going to teach the little ones everyday from morning to evening, but one week into the program I noticed that there was so much more to explore!
