Activity Purpose/ Summary:
We began the lesson with 5 minutes of playtime for the kids to boost their confidence in the water before starting any exercises. This also gave the kids a chance to have fun in the water together before being split into groups based on their ability levels (one group in the shallow pool and one in the deeper pool). We kicked off the exercises with diving, demonstrating the proper arm positioning with arms straight behind the head. Then we showed the kids how to push against the wall underwater using their feet and mimic the diving motion in a straight line.
Next, we did the same exercise on their backs, bending their knees and pushing off the wall with their straight arm. For those who needed extra help, we used water noodles to demonstrate the exact movements needed to do the exercise correctly.
Personnel Input:
By working in the deeper end of the pool with the children who felt a bit more confident with their swimming, I made sure to provide any additional help to those who needed it.
I also assisted with the demonstrations as the other instructors and I showed the children the different steps and motions they needed to achieve.
Achievements:
The children’s water confidence quickly improved, especially on their backs, as we previously noticed many struggled with putting their heads underwater. The kids also understood the exercises very quickly and listened well when we gave them instructions, such as forming into pairs or splitting into groups. We also got lots of smiles and laughter from them.
Unanticipated Achievements:
When we divided the group into pairs, we were pleasantly surprised by the encouragement they gave each other when one child was attempting the motions and movements. This definitely helped boost their overall water confidence and comfort levels.
