Volunteer Coordinator
What inspired you to join Better Me?
I was drawn to Better Me’s commitment to supporting young people and bringing people from different cultures together. Through mentorship, we help young people develop life skills to navigate challenges and grow in confidence. Our volunteer program also creates opportunities for shared learning. Being part of both is what inspired me to join.
Can you share a moment from your work that has stayed with you?
One moment that has stayed with me came from a simple check-in. A young volunteer had just finished her stay with us and I messaged her to make sure she had arrived home safely. I expected a quick “yes, I’m home,” but her reply really touched me.
She told me that before coming to Kenya, she had been genuinely afraid. It was her first time travelling alone and taking that step had felt overwhelming. Then she mentioned our first call.
She said, “You don’t have an idea how afraid I was to travel over for the first time solo. The call with you just lit up the moment and I couldn’t wait to book my flight.”
She went on to thank us for the work we do and for the passion we put into it. That conversation reminded me that our impact doesn’t always begin when a volunteer arrives in Kenya. Sometimes, it begins with a phone call, with listening, reassurance, and helping someone believe that they can take a step outside their comfort zone. Knowing that a conversation I had helped turn someone’s fear into excitement was incredibly meaningful to me.
What is your favorite part of your job?
Helping young people gain the confidence to stand up for themselves and their future. I can relate to the challenges they face, so supporting them through those challenges means a lot to me. Watching them become stronger and more sure of themselves is incredibly rewarding.
How does your education shape your work with young people?
My studies in Community Resource Management taught me how to engage with different communities and understand their needs. I use that knowledge to develop engaging ways to encourage learning, particularly for children who have limited access to educational opportunities.
I also facilitate life skills sessions on personal development and how young people present themselves to others. I want to help them recognise their strengths and become responsible, active members of their communities.
What makes Better Me special to you?
For me, it’s the combination of supporting young people and welcoming volunteers from different backgrounds. There are opportunities to get involved in different projects, and we help volunteers find where they can contribute.
I also value the supportive environment. People bring different experiences and ideas, and there is room to learn from one another while working toward a shared purpose.
How do you support volunteers, and what do you hope they take home?
I guide volunteers as they pursue their interests and get involved in our programs. I want to create an encouraging environment where they feel supported and can recognise what they have to offer.
I hope they leave feeling fulfilled, with more confidence and motivation to pursue their passions. It means a lot to me when their time here helps them see their own potential.
What advice would you give someone coming to volunteer with Better Me?
Come with an open mind and stay curious about the people, culture and experiences around you. Take time to prepare, ask questions and learn a little of the language—it can help you connect with people.
If volunteering in Kenya is something you want to do, take practical steps toward it. Research, plan and connect with others who can help you prepare. Once you’re here, be ready to learn and enjoy the experience.
What are your hopes for Better Me’s future?
I hope we continue improving our programs and reaching more young people. I want more of them to have opportunities to learn, build confidence and discover what they’re capable of.
I also hope we keep building meaningful connections between people from different backgrounds. There is so much we can learn and achieve together.
