Small Moments That Matter – Lucy from Germany

Returning to Kenya for the second time with Better Me has been a familiar and welcome experience. Many things are just as I remembered them — the people, the atmosphere, the daily routines — and settling back in didn’t take long.

Volunteering here again has confirmed why I wanted to return.

The work is meaningful, the team is committed, and the connection to the children and the community feels genuine.

Compared to my first stay, I now know how things work, who’s involved, and where I can contribute most effectively.

Many of the activities were already familiar to me from last year — for example, the Art Class with the Korando kids and the teaching sessions at the Remand Home. Still, no two days are ever the same. Each class and every interaction with the children is different. You wake up knowing what’s on the schedule for the day, but things often turn out differently — and that’s part of what makes the experience so valuable.

A new addition to the weekly plan this time was a visit to “Mama Ngyna.” Helping to take care of the babies and toddlers there was something that really fulfilled me. Although I was only doing small tasks — dressing the children, feeding them, playing, or simply holding them — I had the feeling that even these small moments make a difference.

Every visit with Better Me is unique, and always worthwhile.

Grateful for the journey – and warm greetings from Kisumu

This summer I spent a month in Kisumu and I had the best time of my life. Before going, I thought I was just going to teach the little ones everyday from morning to evening, but one week into the program I noticed that there was so much more to explore!
