Purpose and Growth: My Transformative Journey at Better Me Kenya

When I first arrived at Better Me Kenya, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. Over my time here, however, I’ve experienced significant personal growth. My name is Phenny Owira, an intern from Kisumu National Polytechnic. This is my second month at Better Me, and it has been an incredible experience. On my first day, I felt a mix of nervousness and excitement. The organization’s environment immediately felt welcoming, and as I looked around, it was clear that everyone was striving toward a better version of themselves. I felt motivated but also aware that the journey wouldn’t be easy.

Starting in a new environment can often feel overwhelming, but the staff at Better Me made the transition smooth. They were approachable, friendly, and always willing to lend a hand—whether it was answering questions, offering guidance, or simply sharing words of encouragement. From the very beginning, they helped me feel like I belonged.

The staff members have cultivated an atmosphere where everyone is encouraged to express themselves and contribute to the organization’s mission. This open-door policy made it easy for me to approach them with ideas or concerns, knowing they were truly listening.

One of the highlights of my experience is the collaborative spirit. I work alongside individuals who are passionate about change, and I’ve learned that success at Better Me is not just about having good ideas but about how I communicate and advocate for their implementation. I began refining my approach, ensuring I not only shared my thoughts but also followed through, speaking up when necessary. Through this, I found that confidence and persistence are just as essential as creativity.

The organization offers many interesting activities, some of which include:

  • Education lessons at the Children’s Remand Home.
  • Life Skills sessions at Korando Educational Centre, St. Williams, and the Children’s Remand Home.
  • Art classes at Korando Educational Center.
  • Jijenge Youth Organization sessions, which I didn’t enjoy at first but later appreciated as they helped me make wiser choices after attending a couple of sessions.

One of the most impactful experiences I’ve had was organizing a debate session for the young people at the Remand Home. This idea came from a desire to help them express their thoughts, think critically, and learn how to engage in constructive dialogue.

Leading the art class at Korando Educational Center was a reminder of just how important creativity is for kids. It gives them a chance to explore their imagination, express their feelings, and build confidence. The session wasn’t just about making art; it was about creating a space where the kids felt free to be themselves. Seeing them proud of their work was priceless.

I have also led Life Skills lessons at Korando, St. Williams, and the Remand Home, and it’s rewarding to see the kids implement what we discuss. For instance, after a session on confidence at the Remand Home, I noticed during my next English class that some of the quieter students had started answering questions. This was incredibly encouraging.

Meeting and working with international volunteers at Better Me has been truly eye-opening. It’s a reminder of the incredible things that can happen when people from all walks of life come together with a shared purpose. The exchange of ideas, cultures, and skills not only strengthens our efforts here but also creates lasting connections that transcend borders. I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of such a diverse and inspiring community.

My time at Better Me has been transformative. From the supportive environment to the meaningful projects and daily opportunities for growth, I’ve gained so much more than I ever anticipated. The organization’s commitment to fostering personal development, community impact, and teamwork has left a lasting impression on me.

As I reflect on my journey, it’s clear that Better Me is more than just a workplace—it’s a place where people come together to make a real difference, both in their own lives and in the lives of others.

I’m grateful for the experiences, friendships, and life lessons I’ve gained here, and I look forward to carrying them with me wherever I go next.
