My first week volunteering in Kenya – by Flore from Belgium

After only one week staying here in Africa, Charlotte and I have already experienced so many things. Every day here seems different: not one single day without surprises.

We got a very warm welcome by everyone; David welcomed us in Entebbe at the airport and took us all the way here to Kisumu. Bus drivers here, by the way, are the worst I´ve ever experienced. Torsten, Mareile , Mama Dolfin and all the kids were waiting for us here at home. We felt very welcomed.

Teaching in the school is a real challenge, especially because it is a totally different culture and approach. Having no experience in teaching makes it even more of a challenge. In the beginning, they gave us a book to teach with, just ten minutes before the class started; but we both agreed we wanted to prepare the lessons before, so that we could make it more creative and participatory. The teachers really enjoyed our technique and some of them wanted to join us in the class; which we really appreciated.

The children also love participating in the art classes especially all the supplies we brought from Belgium (big papers, wascos, pencils, paints…) Yesterday, class seven was drawing the dome house, there are some very nice drawings made from the children.

The first couple of days, we explored the neigbourhood around the Center together with Torsten, David and the other volunteer from Germany Mareile. We climbed the hill next door and once at the top we had this amazing view of Lake Victoria as well as Mama´s house.

I hope to see in the coming weeks other nice things here in Kenya J and of course we are all looking forward to see the completion of the dome house !

Greetings from Flore
