Activity Purpose/ Summary:
The day aimed to commemorate both Mazingira Day, Kenya’s National Environment Day, and World Mental Health Day by engaging children and community members in activities that promote environmental conservation and mental well-being. The event sought to raise awareness about the connection between a healthy environment and healthy minds, while also encouraging young people to take an active role in shaping a sustainable and compassionate future.
Personnel Input:
Better Me was represented by Thomas Ogalo, who accompanied the children from Korando Educational Center to participate in the event organized by the Kisumu County Government at Lwala Kadawa Primary School. Thomas led a lively energizer session for the entire group, creating an engaging and positive atmosphere before the main activities began. Throughout the day, he supported coordination among participants, encouraged interaction between children and adults, and helped maintain high participation levels. Thanks to his facilitation, the children stayed enthusiastic and the activities ran smoothly.
Achievements:
Over 8,000 trees were planted by participants from various schools and organizations across the county, symbolizing collective action for environmental restoration. The event brought together children, teachers, community members, and government officials under a shared vision of environmental and mental wellness. Children from Korando not only took an active role in planting trees but also showed leadership and teamwork, proudly representing Better Me.
Unanticipated Achievements:
The presence of the Principal Secretary for Children Services, Carren Ageng’o Achieng—herself a proud alumna of Lwala Kadawa Primary School—brought an inspiring touch to the day. Her return to her childhood school as a national leader was truly motivating for the students, showing firsthand the power of education, determination, and community support. The Principal Secretary also highlighted the government’s dedication to child protection and mental health, which aligns perfectly with Better Me’s mission.
