Activity Purpose/ Summary:
During this life skills class, we built on the learners’ knowledge of what life skills are and showcased how essential they are for ensuring healthy connections and relationships.

We introduced the importance and necessity of life skills in building good relationships. Learners described what a relationship is and gave examples of different types of relationships, discussing what connects people.

We then moved on to discuss family relationships and highlighted what makes a relationship positive or negative.

Personnel Input:
Kevin started the session with a quick active recall activity to assess the learners’ retention from the previous lesson.

Mishan then introduced the topic of relationships, exploring its connection to life skills while guiding and supporting the learners as they shared their own insights. Building on this, I shifted the focus to family dynamics, leading a discussion on the characteristics of healthy versus unhealthy relationships and encouraging learners to share real-life examples.

Achievements:
We successfully introduced the concept of relationships and bridged the gap between concepts and practical life skills, helping learners understand why the topic matters.

The class effectively differentiated between good/healthy and bad/unhealthy relationship traits, giving learners a way to evaluate their own relationships.

We also created a highly student-led lesson, with class discussion taking place throughout. This approach kept students engaged and empowered them to take ownership of their learning.

Unanticipated Achievements:
By modeling effective collaboration and communication among the Better Me staff, the session subtly provided a real-life example of the life skills these learners are exploring.

As learners were encouraged to share their own experiences, they likely discovered common ground with one another. Hearing a classmate talk about a family dynamic can help another learner feel less alone.
