Start Time: 10:00 AM   End Time: 12:00 PM

Activity Purpose/ Summary:
In this lesson, Jake introduced the topic of “politics” to the boys, covering things such as what politics is, why it is important, how to think about politics, and political participation. Ruth provided clarification and translation as needed to ensure comprehension.

Personnel Input:
Jake began by introducing the boys to the concept of politics, providing a definition as well as examples of various political activities (debates in parliament, protests, elections and campaigns, policies/ideas, etc…). Jake then explained why the boys should care about politics by showing that politics affects everything from what age you can drive a car to how much money you make and everything in between. The majority of the lesson focused on how to think about politics. To help the boys think about politics, Jake introduced them to the ideas of social policies and economic policies. Definitions and examples of each were given. Then, Jake introduced the boys to the political compass, a plane that can help visualize ideas, individuals, countries, or schools of thoughts across two axes. The boys were shown examples of ideas and countries placed on the compass. The lesson then opened up for the children to suggest an idea, and then as a class, they would vote on where they think that idea would be plotted on the compass.

Achievements:
I think the lesson exposed the boys to some more challenging vocabulary such as “economics,” “society,” “debate,” “democracy,” and so on. The boys also demonstrated the ability to think of policies and guess where they would be plotted on the compass.

Unanticipated Achievements:
Sure, please provide the text you would like me to review and adjust.
