Activity Purpose/ Summary:
On Wednesday last week, Jijenge, in collaboration with Better Me, successfully conducted a life skills class focused on the theme of assertiveness. This session was part of an ongoing effort to equip youth with practical communication and interpersonal skills essential for personal growth and social integration. The class was engaging, participatory, and tailored to the students’ real-life contexts. It incorporated dynamic teaching methods, including discussions, guided role plays, and scenario-based learning, to encourage practical understanding and internalization of assertive behavior.
Personnel Input:
Facilitators from both Jijenge and Better Me brought their combined expertise and experience to create a safe and interactive learning environment. They guided students through understanding the difference between passive, aggressive, and assertive communication, and identifying real-life scenarios where assertiveness is necessary, such as dealing with peer pressure, setting boundaries, and expressing needs or feelings.
Achievements:
Learners successfully distinguished between various communication styles and articulated why assertiveness is crucial for maintaining self-respect while respecting others.
Unanticipated Achievements:
A few students expressed that they often struggle with being either passive or aggressive and are grateful for the tools that now help them express themselves more confidently.
