Korando Kids join to beat pollution and cause the plastic revolution

Inspiring creativity and Innovation in Children

A journey that started with our environmental club being invited to a Kid-novation waste workshop courtesy of the Naam Festival Lake Victoria led to a visit to the famous Flipflopi Project at Kisumu Impala Park.

The workshop aimed to nurture children’s attitudes on turning waste plastic into innovative Art and craft. To encourage the repurposing of waste products to minimize pollution, they were taught how to use eggshell waste to create Art, water hyacinth to make products such as cards and bookmarks, and the importance of fighting against Lake Victoria pollution.

The FlipFlopi boat made from Takataka is on a journey to sail upstream and create awareness on plastic pollution. It’s a circular economy movement based in East Africa whose vision is a world without single-use plastic. They showcase alternate uses of waste plastic and the viability of a circular economy in Africa through education programs, innovation hubs, and advocacy and governance programs. Our environmental club was proud to have been part of the event and having a platform to showcase talent while also learning from innovators, activists, and artists.

As an Inspiration, our kids made products from waste, including Eco-Africa, which aims to bring attention to the waste pandemic in Africa and sensitize the larger population on pollution. The products were presented at the eco-market after an elegant presentation to Governors and Deputy Governors of counties around the Lake Region, UNEP officials, and The Deputy British High Commissioner.

It was such an honor handing over the amazing piece of Art to the Founder, FlipFlopi, Mr. Ben Morison. He assured us the Art would be part of the FlipFlopi, traveling the world sensitizing people on pollution and showcasing how our kids also joined in the fight.

One of our students, Peter Oduor in Grade 7, a member of the environmental, was also featured in the article by UNEP during a clean-up we hosted in the four-day workshop.

Our responsibility is to ensure we are at the forefront of restoring our environment and making it clean. We are proud to witness our kids actively take part in the fight against pollution.
