Kenya Will Always Have a Special Place in My Heart

When I first arrived in Kenya, I knew I was stepping into a new environment filled with unfamiliar places, people, and experiences. Like any new journey, there was a mix of excitement and uncertainty. Looking back now, I can confidently say that what began as an adventure became so much more,it became a place that felt like a second home.

The heart of my experience was, without a doubt, the children.

Their joy was contagious, their curiosity inspiring, and their kindness genuine. Some of my most treasured memories are the simple moments we shared together, playing games, laughing, learning from one another, and simply enjoying each other’s company. They reminded me that happiness is often found in the smallest acts of connection.

One moment, in particular, will stay with me forever.

After spending some time in town, I returned not expecting anything out of the ordinary. But as soon as the children saw me, they came running with the brightest smiles, excited to welcome me back. Their genuine happiness caught me by surprise. It was such a simple gesture, yet it spoke volumes. At that moment, I didn’t feel like a visitor anymore, I felt like I belonged. It was one of the most beautiful and unforgettable experiences of my time in Kenya.

Beyond the time spent with the children, every day brought something new to appreciate. I enjoyed peaceful nature walks that offered moments to reflect and admire Kenya’s beauty. The chapati dinners became more than just meals; they were opportunities to gather, share stories, laugh, and build friendships. Whether we were participating in activities together, exploring the local community, or simply spending time with one another, every experience added another layer to an unforgettable journey.

Living in Kenya also challenged me in the best possible way. It pushed me beyond my comfort zone, encouraging me to embrace unfamiliar situations with an open mind and heart. Through these experiences, I discovered new strengths within myself and learned the importance of adaptability, patience, and genuine human connection.

One of the greatest gifts of this journey was the opportunity to connect with incredible people. I met individuals whose kindness, generosity, and passion left a lasting impression on me. They welcomed me warmly, shared their culture with openness, and made sure I never felt alone. Through them, I gained a deeper appreciation for Kenya’s rich traditions, vibrant communities, and the power of hospitality.

This experience also reminded me that meaningful impact is never one-sided. While I hope I was able to contribute in some way, I know I received just as much—if not more—from every conversation, every shared meal, every smile, and every friendship formed along the way.

As I leave, I carry with me memories that will last a lifetime. The laughter of the children, the warmth of the people, the beauty of the landscapes, and the lessons learned will continue to shape me long after this journey has ended.

To everyone who made this experience so special, thank you. Thank you for your kindness, your support, your friendship, and for welcoming me into your community with open arms.

Kenya gave me more than memories,it gave me perspective, lifelong friendships, and a place that will always feel like home.

Kenya will always have a very special place in my heart. 💛

This summer I spent a month in Kisumu and I had the best time of my life. Before going, I thought I was just going to teach the little ones everyday from morning to evening, but one week into the program I noticed that there was so much more to explore!
