Activity Purpose/ Summary:
Over the course of a week, I taught every grade from 4 to 9 how to use the computers. Originally, I planned to teach them Scratch as outlined in their syllabus. However, after seeing their current skill levels, I decided to pivot and focus on basic computer skills, from typing to using a mouse. To start, I had them open a Word document and type the sentence, “Hi, my name is ______.” Although this was a simple task, it prompted a lot of questions, with everyone asking things like, “How do you make capital letters?” and “How do you delete a mistake?”—both of which aren’t immediately obvious since there isn’t a clearly labeled button for these functions on the keyboard. Next, I had them open Paint and draw a house, which was a fun way to help them refine their mouse movement skills.
