Activity Purpose/ Summary:
The purpose of the Play4Change Sports Day was to harness the power of sport to encourage learning beyond the classroom by creating an inclusive environment where children and teachers from different schools could come together in the spirit of play, teamwork, and community. The event aimed to strengthen inter-school relationships, promote healthy competition, and highlight sports as a vital part of holistic education.
Personnel Input:
The team coordinated all logistics before and during the event at Tiengre Primary School. We also mobilized and supported the participation of the Korando Educational Center through the FIFA Foundation-funded Play4Change project. Sports equipment, team bibs, and coordination materials were provided for all participating schools. We oversaw the day’s program, including assembly, sports briefings, scheduling, and transitions. Staff and volunteers were deployed to assist with refereeing, coordination, hydration points, and child welfare, ensuring everything ran smoothly.
Achievements:
Successfully brought together over 3,200 children and teachers from six schools in the Otonglo Zone. We organized full tournaments in football, netball, volleyball, and handball for both girls and boys. Our team ensured safe and structured participation for all, with no reported injuries or disciplinary incidents. Through sports, we fostered unity across school communities with shared cheering, support, and participation. We also elevated the visibility and impact of the Play4Change project within the zone.
Unanticipated Achievements:
Non-participating students formed spontaneous cheering and dance squads, boosting morale and fostering inclusion. A heartwarming moment unfolded at the end of the day as students from different schools walked home together, laughing and sharing stories—a clear sign of new friendships and growing community bonds. Teachers expressed interest in organizing future joint sporting events, recognizing the value of these co-curricular exchanges.
