Activity Purpose/ Summary:
We were honored to serve as lead facilitators at the Get Up, Bet Up boys’ camp, a one-day seminar attended by high school students from various schools. The theme of our session was “Resilience and Hope as Tools to Overcome Life Challenges.”
We focused on the everyday struggles young people face both at school and at home, including peer pressure, negative influences, drug and substance abuse, and academic distractions. Recognizing that these challenges can derail their potential, we introduced resilience and hope as practical and powerful tools to stay grounded and move forward positively.
A key highlight of the session was using Curt Richter’s famous experiment to illustrate the transformative power of hope. In the experiment, rats placed in water gave up and drowned quickly. However, when rescued just before drowning, briefly dried and rested, then placed back into the water, they swam for hours longer. The difference? Hope. That simple act of rescue gave them a reason to keep going.
Personnel Input:
Prepared for the session, we organized the kids into groups of 50. We later held a session on the same topic with all the students. Each session lasted one hour and 45 minutes. Afterwards, we received feedback reports from the kids on the topic we discussed.
Achievements:
Our work is emerging as a highlight to other organizations.
Unanticipated Achievements:
The way the students opened up.
