Activity Purpose/ Summary:
On the 29th of June, we were invited to conduct a sexual reproductive health rights session at Mbaga Orphaned Children Center (MOCC). The session aimed to initiate a conversation around fundamental human rights related to sexuality and reproduction. These rights empower individuals to make informed and meaningful decisions about their sexual well-being, including aspects such as sexual orientation, gender identity, relationships, sexual activity, family planning, and body autonomy.
We started our journey early in the day, as Siaya was quite a distance from Kisumu. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the center coordinator.
Personnel Input:
Samambo began the session with a family shield exercise aimed at fostering healthier emotional bonds, improving communication, and helping the children set goals through art and drawing. This activity really set a positive and engaging tone for the day.
Kelvin then led a Q&A session where the children were encouraged to write down any questions they had about sexual and reproductive health rights. We assured them that these questions would be addressed at a later date. Following this, Thomas facilitated the main session of the day, which focused on defining and clarifying values, as well as the relationship between values and behavior. This session was crucial in laying the groundwork for future discussions and activities. Additionally, we shared the Tuko Pamoja manual with the school, providing a valuable resource for ongoing education and engagement.
To wrap up the day, Vivian and Yule taught the children a new dance move, bringing an element of fun and camaraderie to the session. We finished with a group photo, capturing the day’s positive energy and engagement. As a commitment to further interaction, we promised the school to organize a chapati festival in the coming months.
Achievements:
The purpose of this activity was to create a foundational understanding and awareness of sexual and reproductive health rights among the children at MOCC. We achieved this by engaging the children in interactive and meaningful activities that encouraged open communication and self-expression.
Unanticipated Achievements:
One unexpected achievement was the enthusiastic participation and interest the teachers showed, which exceeded our expectations and underscored the importance of these discussions. We also had the opportunity to visit Kelvin’s home, which was on the way from our activity, and meet his parents and children.
