Activity Purpose/ Summary:
We had an art class at Korando Educational Center, partnered with the Ubuntu Family Initiative. The focus was on drawing in the style of Klee, known for his simple stick figures, suspended fish, moon faces, eyes, arrows, and quilts of color, which he orchestrated into fantastic and childlike yet deeply meditative works. The class successfully recreated Klee’s art under our supervision and the guidance of one of our former volunteers, Natalie. After the exercise, we took pictures of everyone in the class holding their artwork.
Personnel Input:
Klee’s famous quote is, “A drawing is simply a line going for a walk.” He believed that becoming is superior to being. Art doesn’t reflect what we see; it makes us see. “Color possesses me,” he once said. Klee used squares, triangles, rectangles, and circles in his work. His innovative layering technique became a defining feature of his art. He would apply multiple layers of thin watercolor washes to create depth and texture. His works, such as “Fish Magic,” exemplify this technique, giving a sense of mysticism and depth to his art. Klee’s main objective was to capture a primitiveness or childlike dreaminess.
Achievements:
The class was able to understand and use colors as instructed.
Unanticipated Achievements:
The class was able to draw with minimal supervision.
