Activity Purpose/ Summary:
This class explored the works of Johannes Vermeer with a creative twist, reimagining his style through the lens of cubism. The children were encouraged to experiment by blending Vermeer’s realistic portrayal of light and detail with cubism’s fragmented, geometric approach to portraiture. During the session, students engaged in hands-on exercises, deconstructing realistic images and reassembling them in a cubist style, striking a balance between detail and abstraction.
Personnel Input:
Facilitators, along with Natalie who joined virtually, provided step-by-step demonstrations on merging classical and modern techniques. They emphasized Vermeer’s use of light and shading, then showed how these elements could be retained within the cubist style. Throughout the lesson, the facilitators encouraged bold experimentation and offered one-on-one guidance, especially to learners who were having trouble blending the two approaches.
Achievements:
The children successfully created portraits that balanced the precision of Vermeer with the structural playfulness of Cubism. Their work showed a growing ability to merge contrasting influences, demonstrating that they were not only learning techniques but also developing fresh, creative ways of thinking about art.
Unanticipated Achievements:
Some learners demonstrated remarkable talent in shading and attention to fine detail, creating pieces that showed a level of maturity beyond their years.
