Activity Purpose/ Summary:
The session introduced the children to the works of Wassily Kandinsky, focusing on cubism and portraiture. Learners were guided to create portraits by combining geometric shapes with bold colors, moving away from the conventional idea of realistic drawings. The activities emphasized creative freedom, encouraging children to arrange shapes to represent human faces or emotions in an abstract way.

Personnel Input:
The facilitators, along with Natalie who joined virtually, played an essential role in breaking down the abstract concepts behind Kandinsky’s style into simple, relatable explanations. They showed how lines, triangles, circles, and rectangles can form expressive portraits and how colors can represent emotions or moods. The group consistently encouraged children to move beyond “right or wrong” thinking, helping them enjoy the freedom of experimentation.

Achievements:
By the end of the session, the children confidently experimented with geometric portraits and created artworks that demonstrated both creativity and the courage to move beyond realism. Their use of colors and shapes to express feelings showed a strong understanding of the abstract style introduced to them.

Unanticipated Achievements:
Surprisingly, the children understood the complex concepts.
