Activity Purpose/ Summary:
Last week, we had an incredible three-day art session at Korando with the kids, alongside Natalie, who was visiting Kenya. It was exciting to have Natalie in person conducting the class, as her presence brought a special energy and enthusiasm to the sessions. The art project involved a deeply personal and expressive activity where the children wrote about three things they love, three things they dislike, three feelings they resonate with, their three best friends, and three things that make their homes complete. They also took pictures with their best friends and made facial expressions that reflected their chosen feelings. The children then created drawings representing all their chosen elements and later worked on their self-portraits, pinning their pictures onto the portraits. The session concluded with the children writing heartfelt letters to themselves, which they also pinned to their portraits. The sessions were lively, filled with creativity, and made even more enjoyable with treats like lollipops and peanuts.
Personnel Input:
Natalie’s presence significantly enriched the sessions by providing new art supplies, allowing the children to explore their creativity freely. The facilitation team guided the children through self-expression activities, encouraging them to think deeply about their emotions, relationships, and personal environments. The team also ensured that every child was engaged, offered assistance when needed, and fostered an atmosphere of fun and learning.
Achievements:
The sessions successfully encouraged the children to express themselves artistically and emotionally. Through drawing, photography, and writing, they were able to reflect on their personal experiences and relationships. The children developed their artistic skills, improved their ability to articulate their emotions, and gained confidence in self-expression. The integration of pictures into their portraits added a unique touch, making the artwork more personal and meaningful.
Unanticipated Achievements:
One unexpected outcome was the bonding that occurred among the children during the sessions. Taking pictures together and discussing their choices of emotions, friendships, and homes led to deeper conversations and strengthened their connections with each other. The interactive approach also encouraged some of the more reserved children to open up and share more about themselves. Additionally, the new art supplies provided by Natalie not only enhanced the session but also contributed to future projects, ensuring that creativity continues to thrive beyond this session.
