Activity Purpose/ Summary:
The purpose of these two activities was to kick off the new year at the Remand Home and to plan ahead.
One of our main goals was to find out what the youth enjoyed most or missed during the last school year, and to see what was helpful or not. In the long run, we want to build a roadmap for upcoming activities that future volunteers can use. Since current volunteers might not meet their successors in person for a handover, having a schedule could be really helpful to keep track of what’s been done and what’s coming up.
For the second session, the topic was grammar. Grete suggested shuffling sentences and having the youth put them in the correct order, which turned out to be a fun and engaging activity.
Personnel Input:
1.) Volunteers reviewed previous activity reports to get a sense of recent projects.
2.) For the icebreaker, volunteers brought in their own crosswords for the youth to solve together as a group.
3.) Volunteers prepared sample exercises for the grammar session, ready to use before and during class as needed.
Achievements:
1.) Gathered enough information to build a roadmap for the upcoming weeks and months.
2.) Clearly explained what to consider when constructing sentences in the correct order.
Unanticipated Achievements:
1.) The youth at the Remand Home seemed less proactive, even though it was mentioned several times that participating would be to their own benefit. After a few attempts, it was helpful to suggest topics, which the youth were open to.
2.) Unexpectedly, the exercises provided were quite good, but the youth did not have much difficulty solving them. As a result, volunteers improvised by creating more challenging exercises during the session. At that point, the youth were able to grasp the concept of building sentences as we walked through the exercises together, step by step.
